Supporting Girls in Sports

Tama Sommo (1950-1997) was a star athlete as a young woman in a time when women’s athletics were undersupported and undervalued. She was an elite discus thrower in her teens and twenties in Southern California. As an adult in Maine, she never lost her love for sports. She went running every day and encouraged all of her four children to participate in sports and a healthy lifestyle. She was an avid supporter of local sports- particularly basketball and cross country- she coached teams and could always be seen on the sidelines. She always encouraged everyone to do their best and participate, no matter how accomplished they were.

Her friends and family are initiating a fund to support girls athletics in her memory.

The current projects are a scholarship at Colby College’s girls basketball camp, and uniform sponsorship for a girls basketball team in Cahuatitan, Guerrero, Mexico.
